The 7th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 23rd September 1783 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Phenomenon by half a head, a chestnut colt by Herod out of Frenzy, owned by Sir John Lister Kaye, trained at Tupgill, Middleham by Isaac Cape and ridden by Anthony Hall. A field of just 4 runners contested the race, although there were 9 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 225 Guineas. (Equivalent to £36,600 in 2017)
